HOCKEY.

The second round of the hockey competition was commenced yesterday, when Levin A met Foxton on the local ground, the match ending in a draw—one all. Foxton attacked from the bully-off, and quickly had the ball in Levin’s circle. Encouraged by lustylunged “barrackers,” the whites made strenuous efforts to score, but the defence was too good. Inaccurate shooting on the part of the attackers spoilt many a good shot. McMurray at last sent In a good shot that beat the opposing goalkeeper. At this stage the locals looked like easy winners, and, had it not been for the offside play of Negus and Bryant, would have had several more goals to their credit. In the midst of some indiscriminate scuffling, the Levin forwards took charge of the ball aud bolted from their own twentyfive to the home circle. The Foxton backs appeared to be caught napping, for the ball was quickly shot into the net —I all. Half-time sounded soon after.

The second spell was very strenuously fought, but neither side was able to score. The Foxton forwards practically camped in the visitors’ circle the whole half. Occasionally the “Magpies” would break away, but their flights were usually short. Once or twice they were dangerous owing to the speculative propensities of the local backs. No further score was registered, however, the local wielders of the ash having to content themseive.-. with a draw when they might easily have had a win.
