FOXTON-SHANNON ROAD.
AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT. The burning question of the Foxtoa-Shauuon road uniuterianee and repair between the Hero- | whenua and Manawatu County j Councils was again brought bei tore the meeting of the former on j Saturday, when a idler was re- ! eeived from the Clerk of the i Mauawatu County Council, seating j that his Council would .sign the agreement re the Foxtou-Shauuou I road if the clause relating to the payment Lo the Iloiowaeiuu County for repairs to the ro;ui within the latter’s boundaries be deleted. The Council was of opinion that as it had repaired the road when called upon there was no need for this clause. Cr Venn said that it seemed to him the Manawatu County were acting in a peculiar way. Personally he could not see that they could get anything better out of a commission than out of arbitration. It seemed to him that if they gave way any further they were prejudicing their ratepayers in the matter. A resolution had been passed at last meeting and he thought that should end the matter. “I am getting tired of it now,” said Cr Venn. Cr Richards (chairman) said that the resolution passed at last meeting was to sign a revised agreement containing the clause objected to. Cr Stephenson said he intended abiding by the resolution. The chairman stated that the chairman of the Manawatu County Council had said they would not have the clause objected to in the agreement, and he had told them of this at last meeting, and understood the motion to sign the revised agreement agreed to the deletion ot the clause. They should either delete the clause or have the commission. The Manawatu Council had said they would not entertain any liability for repairs prior to last January. Cr Stephenson : What are we going to do ? The Chairman : I rule that the motion passed last meeting deleted the clause, and I distinctly stated it at the time. Cr Venn : The Manawatu County Council signed a baldheaded agreement at the first, and then hedged off, and have been doing so ever since. Its like taking a seven pound sledge hammer to kill a flea, said the speaker amidst laughter. The matter was allowed to drop and the deletion of the clause agreed to.
