FATAL FISTICUFFS.
YOUNG MAN ARRESTED.
Timaru, June 14. A young man named William (or David) Wells, belonging to somewhere in the South, but employed lately as a farm hand at Willowbridge, was killed in a fight with another young fellow named Landers. The fight occurred at Morven, on Friday jjght. Landers appeared to be 'Jetting the worst of it, but his Ist blow knocked down Wells, ',’,ho never rose again. Seeing he / Id not come round, he was taken / % doctor at Waimate. He was /'i rated on yesterday morning at e hospital for intra-cranial injury md a ruptured blood-vessel was found on the surface ot the brain. Later Wells succumbed. Landers went to the police station and said there had been a fight, but not foul play. He was arrested, and a post mortem was ordered. At the inquest, a verdict was returned that deceased died from compression of the brain, caused by a blow. A charge of murder brought against Landers was reduced to one of manslaughter, and the hearing was adjourned to Saturday. No bail was asked for.
