LEVIN-GREATFORD RAILWAY.
At last night’s Council meeting the Mayor moved and Cr Whibley seconded, that the Foxton Borough Council submit the following remit to the conference of local bodies and chambers of commerce, “that it be a recommendation to the Government that in order to cope with the congested traffic at present on the Government railways that a deviation be iiuJ.j from Levin ic Grcatford thus saving a considerable amount f of wear and tear and shortening the journey by many miles.” The Mayor said the conference referred to was being held for the purpose of discussing suggested railway deviations, road works, etc., and it afforded a good opportunity of again presenting the claims of the Levin-Greatford link. No doubt there would be a good deal of opposition to the proposal and as the delegate from the Foxton Borough Council it would be necessary for him to have the fullest information. The matter was of great importance. Cr Coley said if the deviation were made it would mean a saving of some forty miles. Cr Whibley said he understood the Unking up would mean a saving of one and a quarter hours in the journey from Wellington to Auckland. The biggest opposition would come from Palmerston North, but he did not think it would make as much difference to Palmerston as the people there appeared to think. If the line were constructed it would be of great benefit to the district. The motion was carried.
