HOCKEY.

To-morrow being a public holiday, no competition matches will be played. The Foxton Club has arranged a match with a team from the Palmerston Technical School, and the following team will make the trip V. Robinson, Hazlett, Daniell, Negus, Burgess, L. Bryant, N. Bryant, Woodroofe, Cook, Baughan, and McEwen. The train leaves at 7.30 a-m.

Last Wednesday’s game, Shannon v. Foxton, was one of the fastest this season, despite the fact that the referee was particularly strict. Foxton players were quite at home on the ground and indulged in one or two pretty pieces of combined play. The wing-forwards, however, who are the key of all combined forward work, did not show up as well as they might have done. Bryant, on the left, played his usual dashing game, but was too frequently offside. He is also inclined to give sticks when centering. On the other wing, Baughan was handicapped owing to his inner support, Hazlett, being continually out of place. McMurray, one of the pioneers of New Zealand hockey, played the best game on the field at bully, and gave the younger players a lesson on the value of keeping in position. Of the two inner wings, Negus was much the better, playing quite his best game so far. Hazlett besides wandering about, was penalised far too often for sticks. The halves were very safe, particularly Matthew on the left. It was practically his first game of hockey yet he managed excellently, tackling and spoiling almost every passing rush initiated by the Shannon forwards. Woods and Ingram were very safe a full, and it was only after Ingram injured his knee that Shannon became dangerous. Their one goal was a very simple one and was just out of reach of O’Brien. This player is easily the best keeper in the district and has saved Foxton in every match.
