Mr F. de Ridder, of Foxton, has received the sad news of the death of his sister, Miss Caroline de Ridder, which occurred at Redland, England. The deceased lady was a great grand daughter of Sieur Jean Bartholomy de Ridder who was killed at the retreat of Neville, while defending the Dauphin of France, It is reported in Thames that a man and girl have eloped from a country district, the girl being the daughter ot a well-known farmer and aged about 16. It is understood (says the Auckland Star) that a warrant has been issued for the man’s arrest on a charge of abduction.

A shocking affair occurred in Beresford street Auckland on Tuesday afternoon, when a girl named Evelyn Tynan had her throat cut severely, her father being immediately arrested on a charge of attempted murder. The child was at once taken to the hospital, and is in a critical condition.

Mr F. W. Shortland, a wellknown member of the legal profession, has, it is understood, decided to contest the Taumarunui seat at the approaching election. Mr Shortland is the author of a number of works on law, and is described as an “ out and out Reformer.” The sitting member is MrC. K. Wilson, also a Government supporter. Mr A. H. Herbert has definitely announced his intention of contesting the Masterton seat in the Government interest, says the Dominion’s correspondent, Mr Herbert contested the seat last election as a Reform candidate, Mr Sykes beating him for the second ballot contest with Mr Hogg. The position, therefore, this year will be the same as at last election, except that there Will be no second ballot.

A petition is in circulation, and is being signed extensively by clients of the Bank of New Zealand, asking the General Manager to allow Mr Witchell to continue as manager of the local branch. The second of the series of dances under the auspices of the local Catholic Church, will be held in the Coronation Hall tomorrow night. As usual all arrangements for the comfort and enjoyment of those who attend are well in hand, and a most enjoyable evening should be spent.

Another of the popular socials in connection with the Presbyterian Church will be held in the schoolroom to-morrow night. Besides a good musical programme an exceptionally interesting competition has been prepared, one that will appeal particularly to men. Refreshments will be provided as usual at the close.

In addressing a female accused at the Supreme Court, Palmerston North on Tuesday, the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, stated that cases of female crime in New Zealand are very rare and he did not know of any other country with a population similar to New Zealand’s where this state of affairs existed.

The Queen of the South, after being stuck near the jetty since Sunday afternoon, got off and sailed for Wellington yesterday morning. This is a little earlier than usual, in the past cutting operations having continued until the first week in June. The swamp will be closed for about two months. Flaxmillers drawing their supplies of green leaf from this source are now scutching up preparatory to closing their mills until the swamp is re-opened. Greymouth people are grumbling at the price of meat. Rump steak is now at gd cash, fillet steak rod, roast sirloin Bd, corned mutton 7d, and so on. The butchers say they cannot help it ; they can hardly get fat stock at all. They tell their customers that there is not sufficient fat cattle in the country to supply requirements. Formerly the Coast was able to draw upon Foxton and Wanganui for supplies, but now, owing to the advance in dairying, even store cattle cannot be procured from the North Island to fatten on Coast pastures.
