PUBLIC MEETING.

TEVIOTDALE MEMORIAE FUND INAUGURATED. There was a large and representative gathering in the Council Chamber on Thursday evening in response to the Mayor’s invitation to citizens to meet and consider what steps should be taken to publicly recognise the bravery of the late Mr William Teviotdale, who sacrificed his life in an attempt to rescue a lad from drowning on May ist, and also the effoits of Mr Guy Edwards and Master Alfred Ebbett. The Mayor dealt at length with the circumstances surrounding the recent fatality, and suggested that some suitable recognition of the action of the three above mentioned should be made. A general discussion followed, and it was decided on the motion of Dr. Mandl and Mr Hornblow to inaugurate a Teviotdale Memorial Fund, and invite subscriptions towards same. On the motion of Messrs Woods and Chrystall, it was decided to present Mr Guy Edwards and Master Alfred Ebbett with gold medals. The following committee was set up to supervise the fund and formulate suggestions to a meeting of subscribers, to be held on May 28th: The Mayor and Messrs (Dr.) Mandl, G. Coley, Jackson, Hornblow, W. Ross, Woods and Perreau. Mr Hornblow was appointed secretary, and Mr Woods treasurer. Mr George Coley was appointed to supervise the subscription lists. The Mayor was asked to forward to the bereaved widow, on behalf of the citizens of Foxton, a letter of condolence, and also to communicate with the Royal Humane Society, bringing the actions of the deceased and Mr Edwards and Master Ebbett under their notice for recognition. A collection was taken up in the room, and resulted in £25 being subscribed. A meeting of the committee was subsequently held, the Mayor presiding, when it was decided to pay all funds into the Bank of New Zealand, the Mayor and treasurer being authorised to operate on the account. It was decided to draw up subscription lists to be deposited in the Manawatu Herald Office, Bank of New Zealand, and the four hotels, and one to be in charge of Mr Geo. Coley. Discussion as to the form the memorial should take was held over until next meeting. The secretary was authorised to arrange re design of medals.
