HOCKEY.
Both the Foxtou ladies aud men’s hockey teams played their first matches in the Horowhenua Association’s competitions yesterday alternoon, and although they suffered deteat in each case, put up very creditable performances. The ladies played Shannon on the local ground. In the first spell the visitors scored two goals, but iu the second half the home team played much belter, there being no further score. Considering this was the first appearance on a hockey field of a number of the Foxtou players, and further, the first time the members of the team had play ed together, they gave a particularly good account of themselves. With a better knowledge of the game and more combination, which will come with practice, the local ladies will be a hard team to beat. At present they make the mistake of not keeping in their places, this point being very much in evidence yesterday. Mr F. Woods refereed. The men’s team played Levin A at Levin and were defeated by two goals to one. Last year the Levin A team won the competition, so that in putting up such a good fight in their first cup match, the Foxton players are to be congratulated. Want of condition went a long way towards their losing the match. In the first spell Foxton scored, but in the second half condition told and the home team put on two goals.
