POLITICAL NOTE.
The Hon. A. L, Herdman will again stand for Wellington Norlh, the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher for Wellington Central, and Dr, Newman for Wellington East. Mr Wright will again contest Wellington South, as a Government candidate with Mr Hindmarsh, who defeated him three years ago.
Mr T. M. Wilford will seek re-election for the Hutt. Messrs Samuel and Bennington have both announced their candidature in the Reform interest for that seat, but the Government is committed to neither.
Mr Joseph Clarke, an ex-Baplist minister, will oppose Mr Poland, tbe sitting member for Ohinemuri. Mr W. H. Field will stand as an Independent candidate for Otaki, against Mr Robertson (Eabour), the sitting member. Mr Byron Brown is also in the field. Mr John Duncan has again thrown down the gage to Mr H. McCallum for tbe Wairau seat.
Colonel Hayhurst will be the Ministerial candidate for Temuka, for which Mr T. Buxton will not seek re-election. Mr G. M. Thomson will have Mr Belcher (secretary of the Seamen’s Union) as his' opponent for Dunedin North.
Mr J. T. Jonson will oppose Mr Clark for Chalmers. One or two others may probably enter the field later on.
Mr Parker McKinley, of Benhar, will be tbe Liberal standardbearer for Bruce against the Hon. James Allen.
It is understood that Mr R. McNab will contest the Hawke’s Bay-seat.
Mr J. P, Luke and Mr Aislabie are to contest the Wellington Suburbs seat, for which Mr W. H. D. Bell will not again stand. The Labour Party is proposing to contest all the seats in Dunedin.
Mr J. A. Mcpheison is mentioned as likely to enter the lists either against M. E. P. Lee (Oamaru) or Mr R. Scott (Otago Central). There should be an interesting duel between Dunedin’s Mayor and Mr H. D. Bedford for the Dunedin West seat, for which the Hon. J. A. Millar will not seek re-election.
So far no Opposition candidate has been announced for either Dunedin Central or for Wakatipu. Mr A. W. Hogg will again be the Opposition candidate for Master ton.
Mr W. T. Jennings will again present himself to the electors of Taumarunui in opposition to Mr Wilson. The Hon. Dr. Pomare will again stand for the Western Maori seat.
Mr W. McLach an, farmer, of Matata, has announced that he will be a candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat as a Progressive Liberal. Mr C. H. Poole, ex-M.P,, has definitely announced that he has decided to be a candidate for Auckland City West. Mr J. C. Marlin, a former President of the Arbitration Court and Judge of the Supreme Court, is spoken of as a likely candidate for the Bay of Islands, in the Opposition interests. Sitting members will be candidates lor the following Wellington country seats: Wairarapa, Sir Walter Buchanan; Palmerston, Mr Buick ; Oroua, Mr Guthrie ; Rangitikei, Mr Newman (Mr R. Hornblow to oppose); Wanganui, Mr Veitch (Mr Fred Pirani will be the Reform candidate); Masterton, Mr Sykes ; Pahiatua, Mr Escott.
Efforts are being made to arouse interest in the Kgmout electorate (states the Eltham Argus). Pressure Is being brought to bear upon Mr B. Dive to induce him to offer his services to the Kgmout electorate. He has also had considerable inducement afforded him to contest the Patea seat.
