Ottawa, April 17

When the Pope’s name was placed at the head of the toast list at au influential Roman Catholic banquet, with the King’s name second, the Lieut.-Governor of Manitoba, Major Deacon, of Winnipeg, Mr Doherty, Minister of Justice, and the Premier of Manitoba refused to attend. Archbishop Langevin, In proposing the Pope’s health, declared the Papacy was the most sublime majesty in the world, for the Pope represented Jesus Christ. After much acrimonious debate, the banquet committee arranged to sing the National Anthem first, then give the Pope’s health, omitting the King’s health. However, none of those who protested attended, except the Mayor of Winnipeg. Archbishop Langevin, interviewed declared that with him the Pope was the first authority in the world ; then he was loyal to the King.
