MANAWATU COUNTS COUNCIL.

monthly meeting,

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mauawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present: Crs. J. G. Wilson (chairman), R. B. McKenzie, W. J. Phillips, J. Henson, W. E. Barber, B. Gray and H. H, Hunt. Letters were placed before the meeting as follows : From Treasury, refunding 13s 8d paid-ons on tram, also is 1 id.

From same, farvvarding subsidy. From Valuation Department, asking Council to supply roll entries for those Native lands of which they required names of owners aud occupiers. From Department of Lands, stating Council’s resolution regarding tree planting along the coast had been duly noted, and would be carefully considered should tree-planting operations of the Government be extended to the district.

From Defence Department, asking for suggestions for giving work to conscientious objectors to military drill. From Horowheuua County Council, with reierence to FoxtonShannon road, proposing to add to agreement covering the arbitration cases arranged to deal with Fox-lon-Shaunon road provision to take in the bridge and portion of road in Horowheuua County. Mr Dr W. Kerr Hislop, complaining of the bad state of roads round Foxton.

Speaking on ' the proposal to plant trees along the coast, the Chairman said the Government had taken 500 acres from Mr McKelvie, aud a start had been made in grassing it. Trees would probably be planted this year. It was decided to recommend that conscientious objectors to military drill should be given fatigue' and cooking duties at camps. The tramway manager reported as under The disbursements being heavy, a debit balance of £6B 13s was made, but included in payments are the following extra items: Alterations to car painting aud extras £\ 15s, rail fastenings £\ 1 ns yd, sleepers and freight ,£43 8s 3d, total 15s. The chief items of traffic were: Grain 104 H tons, minerals 114 tons, merchandise 185 tons, timber 22,400 feet. Fares amounted to 3s 3d. The special trams run in connection with tne Bulls races were not well patronised. The Treasurer reported : General account, dr., xSs id ; loan account, cr., ,£lsl 15s 3d ; net dr. balance, £83 7 23 sd - Amounts available for expenditure to March 31 : Carnarvon £3 ns 3d, Whirokino 3s 2d. Amounts over expended : Saudon 4s yd, Mt. Stewart /9S 12s 2d, Waitohi 8s Bd, Rongotea £62 x6s 3d. Kawa Kawa ,£355 3s 3d, Awahou ,£213 6s yd.

On the Awahou riding the Overseer submitted the following report : Mr C. Petersen is progressing favourably with his contract for supplying maintenance metal on the Foxton-Shannon road, and has completed his contract tor metalling the Whirokino road. The drain along No. 6 line has bee n cleared out.
