LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At Association Scotland, three goals beat England one goal, at Glasgow on Saturday. There were 1500,000 spectators, and 50,000 failed to gain admittance. The Ora Flaxmilling Company have acquired the interest of Messrs Broad and lugram's Flax tniljs at Rangiotu, together with the flix cutting rights of the Lockwood edrte at Karere. R. T. The quality of this line is unsurpassed.* The local Holiday Association notify by advertisement that Good Friday and Easter Monday will be observed as holidays by local shop-keepers, and that business premises will remain open all day on Wednesday of each week. A notice from the Awa Downs Dairy appears elsewhere iu this issue, in which it is stated that xMr Camuaock will succeed Mr Bak as manager, on account of the latter leaving lor Home. There will not be any increase iu the price of milk, aud only the best will be supplied. A rich Texas planter named Ludie Arnold has been charged with violating the White Slave Act by marrying sixteen women in fifteen years. He was never divorced. Eight wives appeared in court and one gave evidence lhat Arnold’s love-making was irresistibly tempestuous. As a platform speaker, says the Post, referring to Friday night’s stormy meeting iu Wellington Town Hall, Hon. F. M. B. Fisher was at his best, and has seldom been heard to better advantage with bis ready gift of repartee. Consequently, interjsctors sometimes had the tables turned on them aud found themselves very much discomfited.
At a meeting of the committee of Manawatu Hunt held at Palmerston N. on Saturday evening, the deputy-master for Foxtou, Mr J. Smith, reported that Messrs Robinson Bros, had kindly granted the use of their property for hunts, and he undertook to prepare fences for the runs. The run at Foxton will be on Wednesday, May 20lh.
During the last week over 15,000 cases of fruit,' mostly apples, were exported from Motueka. The biggest shipment that has left the port in one bottom was taken by the Anchor liner Kaitoa on Thursday, when about 7000 cases were shipped. Of this number over 6000 cases of apples were for transhipment to the s.s. Raugatira at Wellington tor South America.
The Hon, Allen interviewed on the subject of railway rates and finance, said the alteration of rates has to be seriously considered. “ Personally, I do not think it possible to reduce the rates considering the increased annual cost of upkeep. As Minister of Finance I do not see how we will get the railway revenue which I anticipated fur the year just ended. This is largely owing to the loss of revenue due to the folly of strikes. We have come out a little better than it looked two or three months ago, but the revenue is nothing like what we ought to have got from the railways. Auckland Exhibition pulled us up a bit, but not to the extent anticipated.” At the evening service in All Saints' Church on Sunday, the vicar, Rev. G. Y. Woodward, informed his congregation that after due deliberation, be had decided to accept the charge of the parish of Karori. He then referred to his long residence iu ;he parish and the hearty co operation and practical sympathy extended to him by members of the church. He expressed keen regret at his severance from the parish, but iu his decision he had been guided to take a wider view, which he thought would be to the advantage of the parish and himself.
A most kindly and sympathetic action has been performed by an old lady, anxious to help the sufferers in the Hutt disaster. Last week the old lady went to Mr R. H. Webb, chairman of the Board of Trustees appointed at Hutt, and stated that she had lost her husband in the Brunner disaster, and had been left with seven young children. These had now grown up, and she was anxious to help the sufferers iu the Hutt disaster. She could not give money, but she contributed a bundle of infants’ clothing, to be sold to help the sufferers. According to the Argus, the Eltham Borough Council has agreed to purchase the plant and goodwill of Hayward’s Pictures, the price to be ,£340. The pnblic is notified that the blacksmithy and horseshoeing premises of Messrs Ross and Signal and C. H. Podmore will be closed from Thursday evening uext, till Tuesday morning. Now is the time to plant sweet peas. The local Horticultural Society encourages the growing of this beautiful bloom and a trophy for this purpose is on view in Mr Patterson’s window.

The Queen of the South sailed at five o’clock this morning for Wellington with a cargo of hemp, and is due back on Thursday with general. The Awahou is also due ou Thursday with coal from Westport via Wanganui, and the Kennedy with coal from Westport is expected on Friday. Dr. Mandl, who has been ou a holiday in the South Island, returned last evening. Dr. Beard, who acted as locum during Dr. Mandl’s absence left for Havelock this morning, where he will take over Dr. Williams’ practice during the latter’s absence in England. Arthur Hamilton, aged 42, an American, was arrested at Auckland ou Saturday, on a charge of stealing jewellery valued at from Peter Swanberg, a secondhand dealer. The burglary was committed on October 12th or 13th, when the safe was blown open, and jewellery and £6 xos in cash was stolen.
The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Couucil will be held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday next, 14th inst., at 7.30 p.m. Business: Notice of motion by Cr Henderson, “That the resolution passed on March x6th, 1914, relative to the restricted area for water and drainage scheme, be rescinded,” and general. The manager of the municipal pictures asks us to state that in addition to the very attractive him “ A Message from Mars ” which is to be shown at the Coronation Hall on the 15th inst., he has made definite arrangements for the screening of that most stupendous production of a film “Quo Vadis”for the 22nd inst. In connection with the latter he states that owing to the length ol the film it will be necessary for patrons to roll up early as the screening will start sharp at 7.30 p.m. As usual a specially attractive programme is being arranged for Easter Monday. By the evidently organised hostile demonstration that was accorded Mr David McLaren by men allied to the tenets of the Federation of Labour in Dixon Street on Saturday evening, it was obvious that the representatives of the United Labour Party, which stands for evolutionary and lawful progress against revolutionary and unlawful methods, is held in just as bad odour by the “ Red Fed” element as the representatives of the Government, Mr McLaren was submitted to shrieks, yells, groans, and hoots for a considerable time, during which the Labour candidate for Mayoral honours was prevented from being heard. .Mr McLaren was charged with being a supporter of the Liberal Party rather than a Labour man, and although he hotly denied that he had anything to do with the Liberals his accusers refused to accept his assurance. —Dominion.
