THE MAORI “KING.”

TO VISIT ENGLAND.

Auckland, April 1

A meeting at Waahi to-day made further efforts to induce “King” Te Rata and his adviser, Tupu, to abandon for the present the proposed visit to England to lay Maori grievances before the Privy Council, but the protests were unavailing. Tupu said further discussion was useless. He had made up his mind to go, and nothing would prevent him from carrying out bis intention, which had not been decided upon hastily or without much thought. As a result the meeting broke up, and many left during the day for Orakau, while the remainder will proceed to their homes tomorrow. Those who favoured the trip to England were asked to return on the 9th inst, in order to take part in a fitting send-off to the “ King ” and his Prime Minister, who, with the others, would leave Waaihi just in time to board the Niagara at Auckland at her hour of sailing.
