The Anti-Cigarette League in Chicago has established a clinic tor the treatment of women smokers by spraying the throat with nitrade of silver. The first patient was a chorus girl who habitually smoked throughout the night instead of sleeping.
Members of the Police Association in Auckland express gratification at tbe nature and the amount of the rise in pay. “ The extra shilling a day makes the job a good one now,” staled one member, and this opinion is endorsed by other members. At the Bluff yesterday, a five-year-old boy, named Crawford, was drowned in a pool. The boy and a companion had been crayfishing when the little fellow somehow fell inio the water and was drowned ere help could be obtained.
A patient was operated on at the Paris Academy of Medicine and bis peritoneum was replaced by a sheet of rubber. The peritoneum is a thin, smooth membrane covering the whole internal surface of the abdomen. Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum.
Mr Paape, organiser for the Reform Party, speaking up North recently, contended that the Liberals were losing caste with their own supporters, stating as a case in point that of Mr Field, who had previously represented Otaki as a Liberal, and would this year, he said, come out as a “Reform” candidate.
During the ladies’ jumping competition at Waverley A. and P. Show yesterday, Mrs Bekker and Miss Ada Nixon, well-known Wangauui riders, were thrown from their horses. The former regained consciousness after treatment. Miss Nixon is suffering from concussion. Both are progressing favourably.
It was announced at the Catholic dance on Tuesday evening that Mr J. Gillespie was found to have guessed the nearest to the actual weight of the lamb in the competition at the recent bazaar, his guess being 401 b. izoz., while the actual weight of the animal was 4olb. poz. The name of the jockey given to the doll was Chas. Price, guessed by Mr F. J. Williams, and Miss Agues Smith was successful in correctly naming the milkmaid doll. A remarkable instance of Christian union and concord in the backblocks was cited by a Presbyterian home missionary at a conference (says the Auckland Star), He stated that his small congregation at one preaching station consisted of four Irvingites (Catholic Apostolic), lour Baptists, two Anglicans, four Wesleyans and six Presbyterians, the organist being a Roman Catholic. “You could'nt find a more united congregation anywhere,” he declared. “To go among them is like getting a glimpse of the New Jerusalem. (Laughter) Robert Semple, organiser for the Federation ol Labour, returned to Wellington from Australia yesterday'. Semple stated that he was well received and had he wished could have obtained instead of for organising the Social Democratic Party. He was surprised at the knowledge displayed by the Australian public concerning the New Zealand labour movement. Broken Hill was the stronghold of unionism and the Australian Miners’ Association, was willing if necessary to assist the Social Democratic Party with funds. Paddy Hannan, the young New Zealand sculler, who a short time back defeated Archie Priddle, has gained the title of champion sculler of New Zealand. The title was held by Billy Fogwell, of Sydney, who was challenged by Hannan. The scullers had mutually agreed to row, but owing to Fogwell meeting with an accident the match will not take place. To-day (says the Sydney Sun of the 91b inst.) Hannan received word from Fogwell that he had decided to hand over the title to the challenger. Smoked English Haake, just arrived, I/- lb.
