THE GAS WORKS.

SANCTION FOR ADDITIONAL LOAN REQUIRED,

Mr Blackman's report on the Foxton gas works was dealt with at last night’s special meeting of the Council. In this it was recommended that a larger gasometer be erected, and also larger purifiers. The cost of the work necessary was estimated at about ,£2,000. The Mayor said that it would be necessary to raise au additional loan to carry out the work, as it certainly could not he done out of revenue. In the interest of the works it was absolutely essential that a further loan should be raised, as during the coming winter the works would be taxed to their utmost. The whole trouble was that the output of gas was much above the amount for which the works were intended, with the result that the quality of gas was not as good as it should be. If the necessary improvements were, made, he didn’t see why they should not be able to work up a profitable business in cooking gas. He only hoped the ratepayers would see the matter in the right light, as It was absolutely necessary that the loan should be raised.

Cr Coley said he had advocated an additional loan for some time past, as he considered that if the money necessary were spent on the works it would result in more economical working. He was of opinion ii the additional money was not raised there was a chance of losing the money already put in the concern.

It was pointed out that some money would be required for the purchase of gas stoves, etc., and provision had also to be made for new retorts, making the amount required about £3,0 00. It was decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Speirs, that the sanction of the ratepayers be obtained for a further loan of for the extension of the gas works.
