SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday evening. Present : Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rev. Thomson, Betty, Geo. Coley, Henderson, Hunt, Hussey, S. Read and Alex. Speirs. The appointment of Mr F. D. Whibley as secretary was confirmed. Mr Mitchell attended the meeting at the invitation of the chairman and conferred with the committee in respect to sanitary matters. It was decided to effect certain improvements in connection with the boys and girls lavatories. Mr Mitchell was authorised to act in conjunction with the chairman in respect to purchasing certain requirements. The balance sheet of the recent picnic was read and received and disclosed a small credit balance, the receipts totalled £25 193 1 id, and the expenditure ,£23 8s yd, leaving a credit balance of £2 11s qd. A general discussion took place on picnic matters and certain suggestions were noted for future reference. A vole of thanks was passed to the Borough Baud for

their voluntary services, and to the Ashhurst Domain Board lor the use of grounds, the latter to receive the usual donation of £l. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr W. Nye for mowing grass iu the playground. The headteacher’s report was read and received. It stated inter alia that the average attendance for the two weeks the school has been open was 347, the roll number is now

402 —the highest in the history of the school, thirty four pupils were admitted the first week and thirteen the second, while twenty two and eleven respectively were withdrawn, the roll number at the end of last year was 383. Mr Speirs was authorised to carry out repairs required In the boys lavatory and that the Board be written to re blinds and sash weight cords. The question of asphalting the front path was discussed at length. The chairman explained that some lime ago the Borough Couucil were given a quantity of metal from the vicinity of the old school site and were to receive in exchange limestone from the Couucil. The latter body had been unable to procure the limestone and he suggested that they be asked to raise aud asphalt the path, the committee to bear any expense beyond the value of the gravel. The Chairman was authorised to write to the Couucil on the matter. It was decided to purchase a croquet set for the school. Messrs Coley and Betty were appointed visitors for the mouth.
