The Shield match, Foxtou v. Shannon, played on the Park pitch on Saturday afternoon, proved to be one of the closest and most interesting games played this season, resulting in a win for the visitors by the very narrow margin of eight runs. Both clubs were represented by practically their full strength, and it was naturally expected that the totals scored by either team would be in the vicinity ot a century, but the display given was another instance of the “glorious uncertainty’’ of the game, the twenty-two men only scoring 83 runs between them—an average of under four a piece—the balance of five being made up of extras. Tremewan won the toss, and sent Foxton in, Tullet aud Burgess opening. Randall sent down a maiden. Off Butterwortb’s first ball a leg bye resulted, aud three balls later Burgess was bowled ; 1 for 1. Hawke followed, but with the score at 10 Tullett succumbed to Butterwortb. Stiles and Hawke carried the score to 29 before a separation was effected, Hawke being caught by Quarrie, off Butterwortb. Two runs later Stiles was bowled by Judd ; 4 for 31, Three more batsmen, Whibley, Cook and Howe, were got rid of without any addition to the score; 7 for 31. Young was bowled at 36, and four runs later the remaining two wickets fell. Butterwortb bowled well, securing six wickets for eight runs. Shannon’s fielding was not quite as good as usual, a couple of catches being dropped. Shannon’s chances, with only a score of 40 to beat, looked particularly rosy, but Foxton put up a great fight, and the match was not won until well on towards the end of Shannon’s innings. Butterworth and Tremewan opened, Burgess bowling from the south end, A single was scored off the first ball, but with the next Tremewan was bowled, Berquist followed and suffered the same fate as his captain ; 2 for 1, With the score at 16, Tullett caught Judd off Hawke, aud four runs later Butterwortb was smartly taken by Stiles off the same bowler ; 4 for 22, At 29 Harris and Randall were disposed of, the latter being run out. Quarrie, however, pulled the match off for the visitors, by careful play compiling 15. The seventh wicket fell at 42, and the remaining batsmen were polished off by Young, who secured three wickets for three runs, all clean bowled. Foxton’s exhibition of fielding was the best they have given this season.
