WATERSIDER CHARGED WITH MURDER.
Wellington, Feb. 16.
An altercation between some waterside workers and a number ot men from the steamer Makariui was responsible for the death of Harry Gallaghar, a trimmer of that vessel, through being felled by a blow on Saturday night. It appears that the men from the steamer were having the night ashore and went to a Wellington Hotel. Here they met some men from the waterfront, trouble arose and an objectionable word was used. Gallaghar, it is said, demanded an explanation from the man using the language. At this stage the barman interfered and sent the men outside, and there, it is alleged, a man named John Albert Tucker struck Gallaghar on the jaw and knocked him down, Gallaghar striking his head heavily on the ground. As he.did not make any attempt to raise it was perceived the man was seriously injured. Dr. Henry was sent for, and when he arrived a few minutes later he pronounced life extinct. The body was removed to the morgue, where an inquest will be held. It is understood that Gallaghar was a married man and has a large* family living in England. Tucker was arrested and will be charged at the Magistrate’s Court with the murder of deceased.
Tucker was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with murdering Harry Gallaghar and was remanded till Wednesday.
