THE SHANNON WATER SCHEME.
A meeting of those interested in the waterworks scheme so far as it affects Shannon was held on Saturday last, to discuss the proposals submitted by the Foxton Borough Council. Mr Venn presided, and there were present : Messrs Lind, Gunning, R, Stansell, Jr., Moynihan, G. Stevenson, E. J. Judd and S. W. Carter. A letter was read from the Foxton Borough Council setting forth that Shannon be allowed to share the cost of headworks and main to Shannon in the ratio of one-third to two-thirds, but that the catchment area, if afterwards required, be paid for in equal shares. The cost of upkeep and all expenses incurred afterwards to be equally shared. In the event of a meter being installed, that i 1? Council charge at the rate ol sixpence per thousand gallons, and that a minimum revenue from such source be per annum. The Chairman thought the suggestion of the Foxton Borough Council was a fairly reasonable one. Mr Rind bad been over the route and believed he could suggest some improvement that would save 60 chains in the route by bringing the main along Stout Street. Mr Lind moved “ That this committee call a public meeting and unanimously recommend the ratepayers of Shannon to accept the first resolution of the Foxton Borough Council.” Mr Judd in seconding, thought that the Foxton Council had met the Shauuon people very fairly. Mr Carter thought that if the ratepayers of Shannon wanted the water supply they would never get better terms. Mr Stephenson said the offer was almost too good. He doubted if the Foxton ratepayers would vote for the scheme. The motion was carried. It was resolved that a public meeting be called for the purpose in the Druids’ hall on a date to be advertised. Mr Lind mentioned that he had received a letter from Mr L. Daronx, of Wellington, offering a a site for catchment area. It was suggested that the Levin Council be written to tor information as to charges for the supply to slaughter houses, etc. Mr Gunning said that the engineer had stated there was enough water to supply the daily wants of 70,000 people.
