The most remarkable melodrama of all time is the description given of the star film for to-morrow night, and there is stated to be a novel plot magnificently developed, full of stirring sensations, startling episodes, and bewildering spectacles, as thrill follows thrill and excitement intensifies, as the great story progresses to the unusual denouement, as shown in “The Venomous Bite.’’ It describes how Lola, the snake charmer, and Pierrot fall in love and marry. Mauzeni, an acrobat, persecuted the girl with his attentions, and a fight took place between be and Pierrot. A venomous snake was brought by Manzeni, and, stealing into Lola’s room, he substituted it for a snake whose fangs had been withdrawn. That night Lola was bitten by the venomous reptile. Recognising there was something wrong, Pierrot bore her to the wings, and death soon resulted. The crime was brought home to Mauzeni, and he was condemned to death. Escaping from prison, he changed clothes with a drunken sailor, who is arrested, while Manzeni signs on as a deck hand on a mail steamer. Pierrot had meanwhile gone to America, taking the snakes with him. To his astonishment he sees Manzeni billed to dive into a tank from a great height. Just as he was' about to dive, a huge snake, placed there by Pierrot, bites him, and Manzeni is sent hurling into the arena. Pierrot, his vengeance complete, throws himself from the roof, and dies across the body of his rival. The other drama is, “The Silver Cigarette Case,” a convincing play of passion and power. The comics, “Beau from Butte,” “Wiffles and the Diamond Pin,’’’and “Queer Street,” are one and all simply bristling with bland and ingenious humour and merriment. “The Gamnont Graphic” and “Melbourne Cup” films are bound to be well received. A decidedly interesting film, “The Purification of a large City, demonstrates the educational value of the cinematograph.
