WATER AND DRAINAGE.

councillors visit SHANNON.

Yesterday the Mayor auu members of the local Borough Council motored to Shannon for the purpose of inspecting the source of supply of the proposed water scheme, and also to meet Shannon representatives to preliminarily discuss matters in reference to the suggested sharing by the two towns of the cost tire headworks and main from the sources to Shannon. In the morning the visitors inspected ihe stream from which the supply is to be drawn, going right up to the spot where the headworks are proposed to be erected. They were accompanied by several Shannon representatives, and the engineer, Mr Suggate. I. spite the dry spell of weather experienced of late, there is still a good flow of water in the stream, and Councillors expressed selves quite satisfied that tb* was ample water to supply ■ needs of both towns. The visitors were entertained lunch by the Shannon delegab: and a meeting was held in th Mechanics Institute in the afte.noon, at which the Mayor and all the Councillors were present, an.. Shannon was represented by Messrs Venn, Lind, Stephenson, Carter, Moyuihau, Judd and Stausell. The Mayor (Mr G. H. Stiles) presided. The question was discussed at some length, Foxton putting forward the suggestion that both parties should, pay au equal share ot the cost of the headworks aud main to Shannon, but the Shannon representatives considered that this cost should be borne by Foxtou and Shannon in the proportion of two thirds to one third, basing their calculations on a population basis. Altogether the discussion purely of a preliminary natu. neither parties being in a position to make any definite proposals. Eventually the following tm ' was carried by the Shannon re;, sentatives, on the motion of Lind, seconded by Mr Stans That the Foxton Borough Couu cil be asked (1) to state what portion of the cost of the, I- , works and main to Sham | Shannon would be expected pay in the event of the two tow-, agreeing to combine in this matt • and (2) upon what terms Foxloa would be prepared to supply Shauuon with water. This matter will be brought at a special meeting of the Comv ' cil, when the question will be fully discussed. A representative of Mr Seifta:, who owns portion of the land near the source of supply which would possibly be required for a catchment area, was present at yesterday’s meeting, and stated that Mr Seilert was prepared to sell au area for this purpose at a very reasonable rate, but those present considered it was yet too early to consider this matter.
