COUNCIL PROTESTS TO MINISTER FOR MARINE.
At last night’s Council meeting the Mayor moved that this Council on behalf of the borough and extensive surrounding district, wire the Minister of Marine protesting against the unsurmouutable difficulties in which the Harbour Board is placed owing to insufficient revenue to keep the channel open, thereby causing a flourishing industry great hardship, and also the comuunity at large, owing to increased cost of coal through blockage of steamer traffic, and urge the Minister to approach Cabinet with a view of placing the Board on a better looting. The Mayor said that he had taken the opportunity of moving the motion as the river was very bad at present. The lime was opportune to give the Harbour Board a bit of a lift, and it was hoped it would have some effect on the Government. A great injustice was being done by the Railway Department taking prac tically the whole of the revenue from the river and spending nothing on improvements. The motion was seconded by Cr Chrystall and carried unanimously.
