FIRE IN WELLINGTON TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.
Wellington, Jau. 7. A fire occurred in the Wellington Telephone Exchange this morning. One of the telephone wires evidently fell and came in contact with a high power way wire, fusing the section ox wires on the distributing frame, which became red hot, and the insulating material, paraffin, etc., caught fire. The flames spread up to the ceiling of the exchange. An assistant endeavoured to extinguish the outbreak, but in the meantime the brigade arrived and turned, on the hose. The fire was subdued, but the water interfered with the work of the insulators, Otherwise the damage was trifling.
