The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, December 23, 1913.
We take this opportunity of wishing our readers a Merry Christmas. Would that we possessed the power to command happiness and prosperity to reign in every home ! Anyhow, we sincerely wish it, and at least may plenty grace the festive board and “good digestion wait on appetite, and health on both!” Throughout Christendom this is the gladest time throughout the year. It should compel us to abandon selfishness and every evil thought —to remember those who do not enjoy the same measure of good things that has fallen our way. It is a time to offer the glad baud to those with whom we have differed, and probably from whom we have drifted in ways of friendship. It is the season of peace and goodwill--let the superman predominate. The time demands a sacrifice —let that sacrifice be made cheerfully for the sake of some fellow creature’s happiness —and thereby justify that message of peace and goodwill which has rolled down to us through the ages.
The industrial unrest which has dominated this country since October, is now at an end—except as affecting the coal mines and it is probable that this industry will resume early in the New Year. The Red Federation has been told that New Zealand will not tolerate its auarchial methods and blustering intimidation and we sincerely hope that sane unionism will never allow it to again become associated with the Labour movement of this countn.
