ATTEMPT TO BURN LONGBURN BRIDGE.
blaze DISCOVERED IN INITIAL STAGES.
Shottly before three o’clock on Sunday morning what appears to have been a deliberate attempt to burn the railway bridge over the Manawatu river at Longburn was discovered, says the Standard.
The blaze was first observed by the driver and fireman of the express from Auckland, which crosses the bridge a little after 3-30 in the morning. Flames were noticed coming up between the sleepers ol the permanent way at the northern end of the bridge, and the train was immediately pulled up. Fortunately the fire had not got a proper hold of the wood work, and was quickly extinguished by the railways officials on the train.
The damage under the circumstances was slight, and it was indeed fortunate that the fire was discovered in its early stages. There was enough evidence to show that the blaze had not been the result of an accident, sundry materials gathered in the vicinity having been used to commence the fire with.
The police have the matter in hand.
