HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
The committee and members of the local Horticultural Society are to be congratulated upon the success that attended the spring show held in the Coronation Hall on Thursday and yesterday. The number of exhibits received were in excess of those of last year and the quality of same compared favourably with those of previous exhibitions. When the .doors were opened on Thursday afternoon the hall presented a very pleasing appearances, the tables and exhibits being very tastefully arranged and reflect great credit on those responsible, who worked hard in order to have everything in the splendid order it was. Last evening the Borough Band, under the conductorship of Bandmaster Ebbett, rendered a number of selections which were much appreciated. The total receipts, exclusive of entry iees, were £27 13s id, made up of door takings £l l 183, sweet stall 7s 1 id, tearooms ,£5 is 3d, guessing competition £2 7s, buttonholes 15s id and sales 4s id. The sheep guessing competition resulted in a tie. Mesdames Mandl and Fred Whibley guessing the correct weight, 381bs. The points prizes in the various sections were won-as under: Cut blooms, Mrs Galland ; decorative, Mrs G. O. Barber ; cookery, Miss Speirs ; pot plants, Miss Speirs. There were eight entries in the cottage garden class, Mr P. Robinson’s garden gaining the first prize and Mr W. Nye’s second. The prize for the best rose was won by Mr Witchell. The offer of thre?peuce per dozen for birds eggs resulted in a record number being brought in. These have not yet been counted and this task will be no light one as one boy is reported to have nearly 3000 eggs. A protest has been lodged in connection with one eutry, it being alleged that the eggs were not collected in accord- • ance with the conditions, which are to the effect that all eggs must be collected within a three miles radius of the Foxton Post Office. The whole of the officials, headed by the energetic president (Mr H. Witchell) and secretary (Mr H. C. Patterson), worked hard and the success of the function is due very materially to the enthusiasm they displayed. The following is the prize list : PRIZE LIST.
