SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the local State School Committee was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Geo. Coley, Henderson, Hussey, Hunt, Rev J. Thomson, S. Reid, and Alex. Speirs. Correspondence was read from the Borough Council re grant and picture programme for forthcoming concert. It was decided to thank the Council for its assistance in aid of the funds. An advice note was read from the manufacturers of the “Unique' 5 heaters, stating that five heaters had been forwarded to the order of the Board. The Chairman said the heaters were carted on to the school ground, and be presumed Mr Fraser, local representative of the Board, had the matter of their installation in hand. —The Committee were of opinion tbit the erection of the heaters should be left over until the holidays, so as not to interfere with school workThe Chairman was asked to confer with Mr Fraser on the matter.

The head teacher repotted that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 353’5> 349’6. 355'3. 344'4; the average lor the whole period was 350’6, out of an average roll cumber of 384.2 ; the present roll number is 384. A request was made lor a grant of £2 10s towards the cost of tennis material and 10s for picture. Certain minor repairs were asked for. During the week the hedges have been cleaned, and grass mown, and broom and lupin grubbed. The report was adopted. It was decided to vote the money asked for. Mr Henderson was instructed to attend to tbe covering of one of the waste water pits, Mr Speirs reported that the extra windows in the infant room would be erected immediately. It was decided to procure two bags of artificial manure for lop dressing the lawns. Accounts amounting to £6 rrs were passed for payment. Members of the Committee referred to the necessity for painting the school. The Chairman said this work was done by the Board’s staff, and the school had been put on the list. A circular was read from the Board re the necessity for committees finding suitable accommodation for teachers. The committee were of opinion that such action on the part of the Board was very commendable and desirable, particularly so in the cases of females desiring accommodation. Matter left in the hands of the Chairman and bead teacher. Certain details in connection with the concert were attended to. The Rev Mr Thomson and Mr Speirs were appointed visitors for tbe month.
