PROPOSED FREEZING WORKS.
A meeting of farmers interested in the proposal to establish cooperative freezing works in the district, which was called at Palmerston for Tuesday, was very poorly attended, those present being, Messrs H. C- Mellsop (chairman), J. Balsillie, J. Wingate, and W. Barber. Surprise was expressed at the apathy shown, especially as the movement had started very enthusiastically.
The Chairman read a letter from the National Mortgage and Agency Company (Dunedin), giving the terms on which they were willing to give the farmers a share in the Longburn w'orks, in order to serve the double purpose of enlarging the works and to give the opportunity for farmers to have a financial interest in the operations at Longburn. Mr Mellsop explained that he saw a number of those interested in the movement and objection bad been made to the proposed clause to give the National Mortgage and Agency Company control of the management and the sale of the output. He had written to the Company to that effect. A proposal to purchase the Wanganui works had not been enthusiastically taken up, so he thought the only thing left was the offer of the Manawatu Meat Company. Mr Balsillie considered that it would be better to build an entirely new works at a cost which had been estimated at ,£25,000. Mr Mellsop stated that Foxtou or Longburn would be most suitable as a site, but Mr Wingate considered that drainage and other matters would be against the first place.
No more farmers putting in an appearance, the meeting was adjourned for one week.
