FLAXMILLERS’ ACCOMMODATION.
COMPLAINTS IN THE
SOUTH
With regard to the new regulations affecting the accommodation of flax mill hands, it is stated (says the Invercargill correspondent of the Otago Daily Times) that a number of Southland owners have been somewhat exercised as to the effect which the new regulations will have.
It is reported that one or two owners have delayed starting their mills until they have made enquiries and ascertained exactly what the new regulations will entail. Information has been received which shows that the Department will not act arbitrarily, but will allow owners a reasonable time in which to make any alterations that may be necessary. In reply to an enquiry expressed o him, the Hon. Mr Massey wrote as follows :—ln reply to your letter re accommodation for flaxmill hands, and the enforcement of the regulations under the Shearers and Agricultural Labourers Accommodation Act at flaxmills in the Southland district, I have to state that the Department of Labour have no intention of interfering with the owners of flaxmills where it can be shown that insufficient time has been allowed for the alteration, etc., of buildings. In such case the Department will extend the time of the requisition.
