MUNICIPAL PICTURES.
As far as we are able to ascertain, not one local governing body circularised by the local corporation in reference to the desirability of amending the Municipal Corporations Act in the direction of empowering local bodies to provide and control moving picture entertainments, has turned the proposal down. The proposed amendment meets with almost universal approval. The Pahiatua Council gave a good deal of attention to the circular at its last meeting. In moving that the request of the Foxton Borough Council be adopted, Cr Richardson stated that at the present time there was a general complaint that with private picture shows the money went out of the town, If they were run by the municipality profits would remain in the borough instead of going outside. Cr V. Mekalick thoroughly
agreed with the motiuu. He v thought it only proper to support ' the request of the Foxton Borough. If there was so much money to be made out of pictures as the Foxton circular revealed, itwould not. be long before the Council would be able to build a municipal hall there, as a better hall was needed. Cr Mekalick pointed out that with revenue from pictures like the Foxton people got, grass need not be allowed to grow on the footpaths, which should be asphalted. Cr Richardson’s motion was carried unanimously. Other municipalities have instructed their clerks to urge the amendment upon the Minister for Internal Affairs.
