TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

At last night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk presented his monthly report as follows : “I have to report that during the past month the Council’s men 'have been employed as under : cleaning drains and water channels, metalling Moutoa road, Harbour and Whyte streets,.Avenue road footpath, kerbing footpath Union street, asphalting Union street footpath, also in front of Moutoa Buildings, Chung Wah's and Bank of New Zealand. Flowers have been planted in the triangle. The metal ordered from the Railway Department at Palmerston has co’me to band and as it is fairly rough it is being placed on Harbour street. The Frances street cottage badly needs painting on the outside and papering inside, and the range wants repairing as well. I would suggest that the Council visit and inspect same. A meeting of reserve committee was called for Sept. ißlh, when the following Councillors were present viz,, Barber, Read and Freeman. . The following recommendations ’ were made, viz., (r) That a No, 3 wire be put around the track ; (2) That end of the track be filled in and tussocks chipped off. Grass to be cut a few days before the sports. All gorse to be cut out; (3) That the pump be retimbered and well cleaned out; (4) That the rotunda be roofed and windows repaired and covered inside and out with small wire netting. Glass for windows to be 2ioz. Keys to be obtained for door. Rotunda and gates to be painted ; (5) That trees be lopped ; (6) That flagpole be re-erected. A meeting ot the library committee was held ou Sept. 19th. Present; His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Barber, Read, Chrystall and Freeman. The following recommendations were adopted viv., (1) In order to make the library more popular that in place of buying a large quantity of new books at the end of the year, the buying be spread over a year by purchasing a small number each month and such purchases to be notified through the press ; (2) That the library be closed all day every Wednesday and that the reading room be closed all day on Sundays and on Wednesday afterY noon. A meeting of the: public works committee was held on Oct. 3rd, for the purpose of inspecting Hillary’s road. Present: His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Chrystall, G. Coley and T. Henderson, (x) It was resolved to agree to affix the seal of the borough to the plan on Mr Hillary agreeing to connect his road with the crown of the existing roads, Cook and Coley streets, and form the water channels; (2) That the drain at the junction of Johnston and Coley streets be fenced 10 feet each side ; (3) That the Towu Clerk obtain six trucks of metal from .Ike Railway Department at Palmerston N. as a trial. I would like the Council to appoint a day to visit the cemetery and go into matters therewith.”

The report was adopted with the exception that in regard to the recommendation ot the reserves committee that trees in Victoria Park be lopped. It was decided that only the trees along the path be so treated ; also that the flag pole should be removed, not reerected, and that the range in Frances Street be repaired but that •_tfee painting etc., be held over until next year.
