THE “CHEEKIEST” MAN IN AUSTRALIA.
“ LIFE ” DISCOVERS HIM.
Various contests have been held to decide who is the greatest man, and the most public spirited man in Australia, but we do not remember having seen any plebiscite taken to decide who is the man with the biggest “cheek” in Australia. A writer in the October issue of “Life” magazine says that if such a contest were held a certain press photographer of Sydney would become an easy first; and certainly the stories he tells oi this photographer’s achievements indicate that he possesses not only the “cheek,” but the other essentials,
in the make-up of a successful press photographer. This is one of a number of fine special articles in the October number, which make it very evident that the Kditor of “Life” is not relying upon the famous Scott articles to sustain the worth and the popularity of his magazine. Other conspicuous features which might be mentioned are : A fine serial story called, “The Valley of the Moon,” which is being written by that virile novelist, Jack London; a realistic description of the process of forcible feeding, contributed by Miss Sylvia Pankhurst herself; a clear and forceful exposition of the Higher Criticism and its perplexities, by Dr. Fitchelt; and a strong story of Western life.
The instalment of the diary of Captain Scott which is published in this number describes with most interesting detail the life of the party during their winter in the frozen laud, and gives details of the wonderlul journey to Cape Crozier, carried out by Wilson, Bowers and Cherry-Garrard—an expedicion described by Scott as “one of the most gallant in the history of Polar exploration.” This instalment, as in the case of the previous one, is illustrated with a number of photographs of that prince of landscape photographers, Herbert F. Pooling. In addition to these special articles, the regular departments of “Life” are strongly maintained ; indeed, two new sections, covering House Planning and Home Making, and Motoring and Flying, have been added ; as well as a ten] page supplement for women, describing a new plan for buying paper patterns and transfers.
“Life” certainly continues to be a splendid sixpen’orth ; the October issue should not be missed.
