DECAY OF REVERENCE.

The decay of reverence was deplored by the Rev F, C. Spurr in an address at a Baptist demonstration in Melbourne last week. One thing which had pleased him more than almost ahything else in Australia, he said, was the freedom he had noticed among the people, compared with the snobbery that could be observed in London. In the world’s metropolis the clerk whose wages v/ere 18s or £1 a week wore a tall silk hat. The man who toiled in the office, however, would have nothing to do with the gasfitter, who earned higher wages, but rode with dirty hands on the tramcars. The freer intimacy between all classes in Australia brought with it a peril, for it tended to diminish the spirit of respect and reverence, which no community could afford to lose.
