VALUE OF GREEN FEED.
The value of maize as green fodder for milch cows has been endorsed by many leading dairy farmers and it will be remembered that a couple of seasons ago Aorangi farmers planted many acres of maize which yielded so prolificly to the influence ot the far famed fertile' soil of that district. However, Mr J. McFarland has proved the value of lucerne as green feed lor cattle and advocates its extensive culture by dairymen, Mr McFarland has two paddocks laid down with lucerne which provides rich food in the hottest summer. Mr McFarland strongly advises the sowing of tares, peas—or better still potatoes before putting down lucerne. These crops serve as splendid agents for cleansing the soil and stimulate a sweet condition of the soil. Lucerne can be cut three and four times during the year and at each successive cutting comes away again with a stronger, finer and more luxuriant growth, “Maize is good, but lucerne is far better,” said Mr McFarland.
