CATHOLIC BALL.
Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather the ball held last evening under the auspices of the Catholic Church was a great success, over fifty couples present. The competition for the best fancy dresses was exceedingly keen, Miss Lenihan (Turkish Lady), winning from Miss R. Dudson (Gipsy) by the narrow margin of one vote. Prizes were presented to both these young ladies whose dresses were particularly pretty. Mr S. Dudson, Knave of Hearts won the gentleman's trophy his costume being very well conceived. Mr Wilson in Highland costume made a close second. The music supplied by Mr Berthold and the Conlan family was voted first-class. Much praise is due to the latter gentlemen who journeyed from Oroua Downs on such a night and gave their services gratuitously. Messrs S. Dudsou and M. Perreau made very efficient M’s.C. The supper provided by the ladies of the congregation was one of the best seen locally. The tables were loaded with good things and were prettily decorated, the colours being red and white. The thanks of the congregation are due to Mesdames Hynes and Dudson and Misses Hennessy and Dudson who were mainly responsible for the supper arrangements. The gentlemen’s committee, Messrs Jackson (Secretary), Hennessy, Golder, Smith and S. Dudson, are to be congratulated on the success of the function. Extras were played by the Misses Witton, Spelmau and Lenihan. Before closing the Secretary thanked the people of Foxton and the surrounding districts who have patronised the socials so well-
