The new Anglican Church at Masterton, which has been erected in brick at a cost approximating ,£IO,OOO, was consecrated on Sunday by Bishop Sprott, in the presence of a large assembly.

A farmer informs us that this is the finest growing season he has yet experienced over a long residence in this district. There is a splendid growth of young grass and all stock are in prime condition.

The date for the State school annual concert has been fixed for Friday, October 31st. The first portion of the programme will be provided by the pupils, and the second half will be devoted to pictures. At the local Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning, the Rev J. M. Thomson, M.A., made touching reference to the late Mr Leask, and at the conclusion of the service the organist, Mrs Claris, played the Dead March as a mark of respect to the memory of deceased.

Mr C. J. Skinner, Wanganui Education Board’s Truant Officer, is visiting Foxton in connection with the technical classes. Mr Skinner will canvass parents and employers in connection with enrolling pupils.

Yesterday was Dominion Day. It was not observed locally as a holiday except by the Bank, Docal sportsmen were fairly well represented at the Otaki races yesterday and a number also left this morning by motor for the course. The Queen of the South arrived this afternoon from Wellington with a cargo ot benzine, kerosene, and motor spirits. The plans and specifications in connection with the proposed additions to Mr Gower’s residence may been seen by intending tenderers at this office.

E, Arthur, jeweller, of Fay Street, Invercargill, were entered by burglars, who got away with £4OO worth of goods. The thieves effected an entry through the back part of the premises, boring out a portion of three doors and reaching through the apertures to unlock them.

When acknowledging a vote of thanks to the directors and staff at the meeting of shareholders in the Union Company, Sir James Mills mentioned the Maori, of 174 tons gross register, one of the pioneer steamers of the company, was still in existence and was employed in the local trades in the Samoan group.

A remarkable operation was peforraed in London by Dr. F. H. Albee, of New York. In the presence of surgeons from all countries he cut out a piece of the shinbone of a child of four, with the aid ot an electric circular saw, and inserted the piece of bone in the child's spine, which had been attacked by tuberculosis. The operation took twenty-two minutes.

Most of the Tateti propertyowners are losers by the recent floods. Some are in a sad plight. On one farm there is even now three ieet of water. Much of- the grass is soured, the stock are doing 110 good and everybody who knows the facts is sympathising. Mr Fraser, K.C., has prepared a petition to Parliament, asking for an enquiry by a Royal Commission. This is to be sent round for signatures. A suggestion has been made to buy a disused gold dredge, scour out the river from Henley upwards, and elevate the spoil so as to construct stable banks.

It is not uncommon to hear complaints from telephone subscribers who are compelled to wait their turn before getting telephonic connection with outside centres. Imprecations are hurled at the heads of the unfortunate telephone clerks, who are wrongfully accused of slothfulness or somnolence by impatient subscribers who are too apt to judge the “hello” bo> wrongfully.
