SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Hussey, Hunt, Henderson and the Rev Mr Thomson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Read and Alex Speirs. Correspondence was received trom the Education Board re grant of towards cost of levelling playground. It was resolved that technical classes, on the lines laid down by Mr Gabites, and the appointment of Mr Gabites as supervisor be confirmed. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Hornblow for placing her kitchen at the disposal of the supervisor for the cookery class. The question of increasing the caretaker’s salary was held over till next meeting. A letter was read from the teaching staff, per the head teacher, consenting to provide half the programme for the concert in aid of the school funds, and suggesting that the date be fixed for the end of October, so as not to interfere with the examinations. It was decided to ask the head teacher to fix a date for the concert and that the committee wait upon the Council re hire of hall and films. The head teacher’s report stated that the average attendances for the past four weeks were : 338, 341.6, 344, 345.8, average for the whole period 342.3 out of an average roll number of 376 ; the present roll number is 387, which is within 10 of the highest roll number yet recorded in the school; the average attendance being 91 per cent, of the rol 1 number ; certain other matters of minor importance were referred to. It was decided to make enquiries re the purchase of lawn mower. Accounts were passed lor payment. Messrs Henderson and Hornblow were appointed visitors for the month.
