“WILD MAN IN THE WOODS.”
PITIFUL WHANGAREI CASE. There have been some serious stories of late In Whangarei concerning a mysterious individual who has been frequenting the bush in the vicinity of the Whangarei Heads, and whose movements had led the settlers there to leel a sense of alarm, which was intensified last week when a disused whare was destroyed by fire. The police then visited the locality, and as a result they arrested a man named Sydney Mac Kinder, who was identified as formerly an employee of the Whangarei Freezing Company. It appears that the unfortunate man had taken to the bush, where he had subsisted on berries and watercress. He was in a very emaciated condition when secured, barefooted, ill-clad, and with hair matted and reaching to his shoulders. The sequel was his appearance at the Police Court on a charge of vagrancy, when the presiding justices decided, in the defendant’s best interests, to sentence him to three months’ imprisonment.
