The trial of William Edward Arthur Clemens and Elizabeth Ireland, charged with having at Pukehinau, on August 4, attempied to murder Frederick Ireland, husband of the female accused, was continued at the Supreme Court on Thursday. •
After a retirement of a little over half an hour the jury returned with a verdict of guilty against Clemens on the second count intent to do grievous bodily harm, and did actually do grievous bodily harm,. Against Mrs Ireland a verdict of not guilty was brought in and prisoner was discharged. Yesterday morning Clemens was brought forward for sentence and His Honour the Chief Justice passed a sentence of two years’ hard labour and three years’ refoimatorv treatment, after which prisoner will be under the control of the Prisons Board for a time.
