LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.

MODE OF ELECTION OF

MAYORS

PROTEST BY COUNCIL.

At last night’s meeting of the local Borough Council, Cr Whibley moved that this Council enter an emphatic protest against the proposal contained in the Local Government Bill that the Mayor shall be elected by the Council instead of the burgesses, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Prime Minister and member for the district. The mover did not think it was necessary to speak at any length on the motion, as the Councillors no doubt agreed that the present method of electing Mayors was the best, and likely to give the best results.

The motion was seconded by Cr Henderson, who, with Crs Speirs, Coley, and Freeman and the Mayor, spoke in favour of same, and it was carried unanimously.
