SHOOTING SENSATION AT PUKEHINAU.
Dannkvirke, August 5. Details regarding the shooting affray at Pukehinau are meagre. Frederick Ireland, the man allegedly shot by Wm. Clements, was brought to Dannevirke hospital this afternoon. His condition is not serious. The gun was loaded with shot, and the doctor extracted about thirty pellets from the injured man’s hand.
Clements was arrested early this morning, and is now in custody, charged with attempted murder.
The parties lived together, and when going to bed Clements, it is alleged, told Ireland a horse was in the fence, and decoyed Ireland some distance. Ireland asked, “Where is the horse ?” Clements said, “Here, here,’’ and allegedly fired two barrels into Ireland. The latter then ran along to a neighbour, who informed the police, and a constable went and found Clements and Mrs Ireland locked in the house. Both were arrested, and are remanded to appear at Palmerston North next Monday.
