A fire at Waiharara, near Awanui, occurred yesterday morning and destroyed a boardinghouse occupied by F. P. Riley, who perished in the flames. During last month the largest estate certified ior stamp duty was that of Edward Joshua Riddiford, of Wellington, for an amount of £548,622.

Sir Joseph Ward took his seat in the House on Tuesday afternoon. As he entered the Chamber he was greeted with a round of applause. Hon. J. Allen, who was in the midst of a speech at the time, expressed pleasure at seeing the member for Awarua back in the House. Shortly afterwards Sir Joseph made a short speech on a question arising out of the Local Bodies Loans Bill, Before entering upon his speech he made a few appropriate remarks regarding the late Sir Arthur Guinness, and also offered his congratulations to Mr Speaker Lang, on the latter’s election to his present office.
