SIR JOSEPH WARD.
ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND.

Sir Joseph Ward arrived by the Niagara from Sydney, and was formally welcomed at the Star Hotel by a large and representative liberal gathering. Speeches weye made by Messrs A. M. Myers, 0. Fowlds, T. W. Leys, F. La wry, A. E. Glover, W. J. Napier, and P. J. Nerheny, who all extended a cordial welcome, apd expressed the hope that Sir Joseph Ward would long be spared to the people in the interests of the Liberal party and the progress of New Zealand. Sir Joseph Ward, replying, said that, as far as the future was concerned, he had no intention of forcing himself upon any party or asking or accepting any favour. Replying to more direct suggestions that he should assume the Leadership of the Liberal party, he spoke at some length, but gave no definite indication regarding his attitude.
