The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, July 19th., 1913. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Tne Mayor is to be commended for taking definite steps to have the old cemetery, a valuable piece of land adjoining the State school, vested in the borough. The laud is owned by the wife of a Motuiti Native, whose father was noted for his generous gifts of laud to the Government in the early days. The section is lapu or sacred according to Maori custom because it contains the remains of a number of their people, as well as Europeans, and the Native owner would object to it being desecrated by buildings. At present the section is an eye sore. Stock are allowed to wander over it ; tall pines have recently been felled, and slumps and tree trunks add to its deserted appearance. If the sectioujis legally transferred to the borough it could be transformed into a beauty spot, and add to the attractiveness ot the town. We hope the Mayor’s efforts on this occasion will meet with success.
