THE MAORI CEMETERY.

At Monday night’s Council meeting the Mayor brought up the question of taking steps to have the old Maori Cemetery at the north end of Main Street vested in the Council. He said that this matter had been brought forward on a previous occasion and it was then decided to get control of the land if possible, but eventually the matter was dropped for various reasons. At the present time the section presented a very dilapidated appearance, but the Council could not spend money on it until it was vested in the borough. He believed that there was only one owner living now and she was favourable to the proposal, and he was of opinion that they should take the necessary steps to get control of the property. Cr Speirs supported the motion. He considered the spot should be beautified.

It was proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley and carried, that we now take steps to have the Maori Cemetery legally vested in the borough so that we might effect improvments which would greatly improve that portion of the town.
