PARLIAMENT.
The Address in-Reply debate was continued in Parliament or Tuesday by Messrs Sykes, Myers, Hon. Herdman, Atmore and J. Payne, the House rising at p.m. Yesterday members of the House took advantage of the opportunity to discuss Ministerial replies to questions for two hours. The Address-in-Reply debate was resumed late in the afternoon by Mr A. Harris, who championed the Government, and spoke very slightingly of its opponents. Mr J. Colvin, the member for the district in which Westport, and with it the Westport Harbour Board, is situate, attacked the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher for having displaced two members of the board, and put others in their places. He charged the Minister with patronage. The Minister, having spoken already, could make no general reply, but he corrected one or two of the statements, and promised that the proposed inquiry into the affairs of the board should be conducted by a Parliamentary Committee, and that not only the administration of the board, but the board’s .action and his actions should be included within the committee's order of reference.
One of the speeches of the debate was delivered by Mr C. K. Wilson, member for Taumarunui, who put forward an earnest plea for settlers, particularly those who are isolated in the backblocks.
The last speaker of the evening was Mr A. E. Glover, who frankly expressed his distaste for nonpolitical control of the Public Service. The House rose at n.B p.m.
