BOROUGH COUNCIL.
SPECIAL MEETING
A special meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday. Present : The Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.), and Crs Coley, Freeman, Henderson, Read, Speirs, Chrystall and Geo. Barber. Apologies were received from Crs, Green and Whibley. The balance-sheet as received from the Auditor and Controller General was adopted, and the Mayor was authorised to sign the usual declaration re same.
The works committee reported as follows: That Mr Jenks be given permission to erect a temporary shed for twelve months as requested, such permission not to form a precedent. Mr J. Rose and the Ropeworks be requested to clean out their drains and bring up to the fall, the bottom drain not to be less than 18 inches and that Mr Rose be requested to clear around the outfall to the river and the Ropeworks be asked to replace the broken pipe near shed. That the folowing property owners, viz., Messrs Everleigh, Hillary, Hynes, Page senr., Hillman, Whitten, Page junr., Newth, McSaveuy and Dudson be requested to clean out their portion of the drain running from Johnston to Futter Street. That the nob on Moutoa Road be removed and that a price be obtained from Mr Jas. Coley for its removal to the level of the crown of the road. That the drain on Baker Street be fenced on each side. That 6-iuch pipes be put across Tbynne Street and that the water table be cleaned up and opened at both ends.
The report was adopted and the tender of Mr Jas. Coley (,£25) for removaljof sand hill was accepted. Mr Simmons’ application for permission to erect a motor garage of wood and iron was refused as being against the Borough by-laws relating to the brick area.
On the motion of Crs Freeman and Henderson, it was decided to erect sign posts at the corner of Lady’s Mile and Park Street and also the junction of Levin and Shannon roads, also Levin Road and Parcel Street corner, also north-east corner of Victoria Park.
The Health Officer reported upon the insanitary condition of a dwelling-house iu Norbiton Road and a motion was passed requesting the owner to comply with the health officer’s recommendation. The Town Clerk was authorised to obtain estimates for street name plates.
The Town Clerk was authorised to purchase a more modern typewriter and to dispose of the one now in use. It was decided to hold a special meeting on the 22nd inst. for the purpose of striking rates.
