A large number of townspeople visited the Palmerston Show yesterday. The local bachelors have issued invitations for a ball to be he}d on July nth in the Town Hall.

The local Borough Band will play a number of selections in front of the Municipal Hall on Saturday night, prior to the picture entertainment. Professor Braemar has consented to give a few simple mesmeric tests at the Presbyterian social this evening. This should lend a special attractiveness to the programme.
We give a reminder of the social to be held in the Presbyterian Schoolroom this evening. A most entertaining programme has been arranged, and refreshments will be provided. Owing to a local scarcity offish, Mr M. Perreau has made arrangements with the Napier Trawling Co. lor regular supplies of fish, notifies that fish suppers at Per reau’s Buffet will in future be a speciality.* On the fourth page of this issue will be found the following interesting reading matter: —“Moutoa Notes,” ‘‘Shannon Notes,” “Solar Observatory,” “Native Land Court,” and ‘‘Flaxmill Accommodation.” A feature of the Catholic Social to be held in the . Town Hall tomorrow night will be two of the most popular items given at the recent Convent school concert, viz., the Kerry dance and Master humorous solo.
We remind the public of another of the popular series of socials under the auspices of the Catholic Church, to be held in the Town Hall to-morrow night. It goes without saying that this social will be as enjoyable as any ot its predecessors. While a railway porter named D. Jeffery was assisting in shunting operations at Lawrence, Auckland, about midday Tuesday he was caught between a wagon and a loading-stage at the cattle-yard. The extent of his injuries is not yet known, but they are regarded as serious.
Mouusey and Co. advertise a sale of property on behalf of Mr S. H, Wrigley, to be held at Mr W. Nye's yards on Wednesday afternoon next, at 2 p.m. The property is situated at the corner of Ravensworth Place and Duncan sreet, and the house is a very choice one, and in excellent order. As Mr Wrigley is leaving Foxton, the property must be sold. A special meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board will be held at the Council Chambers, Palmerston N. on Tuesday, 24th inst, at 1.30 p.m. Business: (4) To deal with proposed amendments to Bill prior to advertising. (2) To frame remits for meeting of Harbour Association, and appoint delegates. (3) And any other special business necessary.

There should be a good attendance at this sale, as several valuable properties will be offered on behalf of Messrs Hillary, Wrigley, and others, which should create a really live interest in the place. A schoolgirl named May Obuglein was admitted to the Auckland hospital Tuesday night suffering from severe burns about the body. The girl went outside the house with alighted candle, which set fire to her clothing. Cries for help were heard, and tbe flames were extinguished. After receiving medical attention, tbe girl was sent to the hospital. Her condition is regarded as serious. An inquest was held on Tuesday afternoon into the circumstances of the death of Sarah Billinghurst, widow, aged 67, whose body was found in the Wanganui river. Deceased, who acted as a housekeeper, had been missing since June 3. She was not of strict temperance habits, and she had just collected her old age pension. There was no evidence to show how she got into the river, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
In his report at Monday night’s Council meeting the Inspector of Nuisances again drew attention to the fact that some of the shopkeepers persist in obstructing the footway by hanging goods outside their premises, and also that a number are still sweeping the dust and rubbish from their shops on to the street. He asked if he was to enforce an observance of the by-law in this connection.—lt was decided on the motion of Cr Barber, seconded by Cr Freeman, that the Inspector of Nuisances be authorised to carry out his duties as laid down in the by-laws, unless otherwise instructed.

All articles left at the Masonic Hall for the Poster Ball may be procured on application to Mrs Healey. Fifteen thousand people witnessed the Wanganui-Te Ante inter-college matches at Palmerston yesterday. The senior game ended in a victory for Wanganui by 29 points to 19 points, and the junior in a draw, the scores being 6 all.
