The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, June 19TH., 1913. UNFENCED SECTIONS.

A motion was passed at last meeting of tbe Borough Council calling upon the owner of an unfenced section in Main Street to fence same. The Municipal Corporations Act (section 193) states “ that whenever the public health, safety or convenience renders it expedient, the Council may require the owner or occupier of any land not separated from a street by a sufficient fence to enclose the same by a fence to the satisfaction of the Council.” There are at least five or six unfenced sections in Main Street, and why the Council should single out only one owner to comply with tbe Act is beyond our comprehension for the other sections are just as great a menace to the “ public health, safety or convenience ” as the one singled out for special attention. There is no doubt that such open spaces are not in the interests of public safety, morality or health, and should be properly enclosed. We hope the Council will, at a future meeting, give the motion a wider application.
