DISPOSAL OF PROFITS.
At last night’s Council meeting, the Mayor moved that a sum. of £3OO be taken from the surplus of the Town Hall account ami paid to the Public Trustee in reduction of the loan of ,£2,800. In speaking to the motion, the
mover said that he had communi-
cated with the Public Trustee in .Inference to the matter, and 'he had replied, stating . that the '’■'lmount' would be accepted ' with- ' out penalty if forwarded within - fourteen days. The. Mayor said that at the end of the financial year there, was a balance to the • credit of the Town Hall account of over The installation of the electric light would absorb abdut ]£2so of this amount, and if the £3OO were disposed of in the
' manner proposed there would still ' be a balance left of some ,£SO. He. didn’t think any better use could be made ot the money than that proposed. Cr Whibley seconded the motion. Chrystall said he was strongly against the. motion, as he considered any surplus should be transferred to the gas works account. 'He considered the money should be used to. reduce the rates,: Cr Speirs approved of the motiofi;< as he did not think the money should be used to pay off gas works losses. The money was earned by the Hail, and it should be expended on it. The motion, on being put, was carried, Cr Chrystall alone dissecting.
. SKATING RINK. In connection with the Municipal Skating Rink, the Mayor moved, and 'Cr Henderson seconded, that the Town Clerk be relieved of the duties of taking charge of the skating rink, and that this,be left in the bands of .Mr McArtney to run to the best aovautage, and to consult with the Mayor on any special matters. The Mayor said that at a previous meeting it had been - suggested that the Town Clerk should be relieved of some of the , duties at the Town Hall, and he thought this was one that could very well be taken off his hands. He didn’t think the Town Clerk should be-expected to be in attendance at the hall on four or five nights every week. Of course, V; his motion , referred purely to running r the skating rink, the financial matters in connection with same would, as formerly, be ■ undertaken by the Town Clerk. Cr. Cpley asked if the caretaker of the hall would expect any V additional pay for this work. The Mayor said that he distinctly pointed out to Mr McArtney that this work was included in his present agreement, and that there would be no extra pay tor it. Cr Coley also asked if the skating rink was paying. Mr Fraser said thaj; this year ->the i rink was clearing expenses and a little over. The motion was carried. '. .PICTURE PRICES. Matters in connection with the Municipal Picture. Show were dealt with in committee, and on ■ resuming business, the following motion was passed ‘ Proposed by the Mayor, and seconded by Cr Speirs, that the chalffebf for pictures be reduced to! one shilling for circle and sixpence for stalls and pit > children halfprice, and that the pictures be screened on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
